Fillet Weld
Design resistance of a fillet weld using the Eurocode 3 (EN 1993-1-8) simplified method: whatever its direction, the force is checked as shear on the weld throat area.
Weld stress τ = F / (a·l)120MPa
- Design shear strength f_vw,d
- 208 MPa
- Weld resistance F_w,Rd
- 207.8 kN
- Utilisation
- 58 %
- Leg length z ≈ a·√2
- 7.1 mm
- F ≤ F_w,Rd — 58 %
- a ≥ 3 mm (EN 1993-1-8 minimum throat)
- Effective length ≥ max(30 mm, 6a)
METHOD
How it is calculated
f_vw,d = (f_u / √3) / (β_w · γ_M2) F_w,Rd = f_vw,d · a · l τ = F / (a · l) ≤ f_vw,d
ASSUMPTIONS & NOTES
- a is the throat thickness (leg length z ≈ a·√2).
- The simplified method is conservative; the directional method (§4.5.3.2) can give higher resistance.
- Deduct 2a from the length for end craters where applicable.
Results are for preliminary design and checking; base the final design on the governing standard and safety factors.
