METHOD

How it is calculated

Rectangle: Ix = b·h³ / 12        Round: I = π·d⁴ / 64,  J = π·d⁴ / 32
Tube: I = π·(D⁴ − d⁴) / 64
I-section: Ix = [b·h³ − (b − t_w)·(h − 2t_f)³] / 12
W = I / e_max        i = √(I / A)
ASSUMPTIONS & NOTES
  • Corner radii are ignored; catalogue values for rolled sections differ slightly.
  • Mass per metre uses steel density (7850 kg/m³).

Results are for preliminary design and checking; base the final design on the governing standard and safety factors.
